Kim Schram was a unanimous choice for the All-Big Ten Team and Maggie Griffin was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. [full story]

A Distinction for MSU?

During the ten-week 2004 conference season, six of the players chosen as Big Ten Player of the Week earned the award for excelling in their match against the Spartans. Either a strong performance against MSU is highly regarded in the award selection or we bring out the best in our opponents!

Honors Students

The MSU Volleyball team counts five outstanding Honors College Students among their players: Michaela Kopka, Brooke Langston, Diana Steplyk, Kim Schram, and Miken Trogdon. The women have earned numerous academic and athletic accolades over the year. Michaela Kopka was selected for Academic All Region honors. Kim Schram was selected for First Team All Big Ten, All Region and Honorable Mention All-American for her volleyball endeavors. (from HConnections, publication of the MSU Honors College)

A Tough Road Trip

MSU headed for Columbus, Ohio and University Park, Pennsylvania on October 15 to play the number 8 and 5 ranked teams in the country. Friday's match against Ohio State was swept by the Buckeyes 3-0. Saturday's match against Penn State went four games, with the Nittany Lions coming out on top.

The Big Ten has announced the television schedule for the fall 2004 volleyball season. No Spartan home matches are included, but the match at Penn State will be on ESPN2 and those at Illinois and Wisconsin on Fox Sports Chicago.[full story]

Returning Home

On Friday, October 1 MSU came from behind in each of the first two games against Indiana to defeat the Hoosiers 3-0. Saturday brought MSU their third five-game match of the year, ending in a loss to the Purdue Boilermakers.

Wallin Out for the Season

Chuck Erbe announced on September 29 that Megan Wallin's injury during the Minnesota match has been diagnosed as a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee. She was scheduled for surgery October 14 to repair it. [State News story]

Conference Play Begins

The Spartans opened the Big Ten conference season last Friday with a match against the #1-ranked team in the country, Minnesota, who lived up to their ranking by dominating MSU 3-0. Megan Wallin injured her knee in the match, and is out for an undetermined time.

Then the Spartans traveled to Iowa City for a Saturday night match against the Hawkeyes, which ended in a 1-3 loss.

Schedule Change for South Carolina Tournament

The University of Southern California cancelled their trip to South Carolina, but the tournament went on with a revised schedule. MSU lost the first match of the weekend to Notre Dame 1-3 on Friday, and fell to South Carolina 2-3 on Saturday. This is the first time since 1993 that the Spartans finish a tournament appearance without a victory.

One of MSU's players hoped to celebrate her birthday on Friday September 17 by beating Notre Dame. [Who was it?]

Starting Setter Chosen

Chuck Erbe announced this week that freshman Maggie Griffin will set for the volleyball squad this year. If Maggie's career goes as planned, she would be the first four-year setter to play at MSU for Chuck Erbe and only the second in Spartan history. [Who was the first?]

Langston and Wallin Named Captains

Red-shirt juniors Brooke Langston and Megan Wallin have been chosen as co-captains for the 2004 Spartan volleyball team.

Spartans Fourth in Big Ten Poll

Fourth place has been a familiar neighborhood for MSU in the Big Ten coaches' preseason poll, with their rankings varying from third to fifth for the last seven years. Kim Schram earned the unanimous support of the coaches for a spot on the 2004 preseason All-Big Ten preseason team, which features what might be a record number of seniors this year.[MSU story] [Big Ten story]

Three new freshmen will join the program this fall while, unfortunately, Sara Villwock's foot injury has forced the end of her volleyball career.[full roster]

Spartan-To-Be Wins National Honors

Setter Maggie Griffin was named MVP of the 18 Open Division of the USAV Junior Olympic Championships. In so doing, she became the first player in JO history to win the award twice. Her Sports Performance 18 Elite team also won the gold medal in the 18 Open Division.

Big Ten and Other News

Penn State Takes 1st Place

Penn State won the Big Ten championship for the second year in a row and earned the number two national seed for the NCAA tournament. [full story]

Minnesota Tops Poll

On September 13, Minnesota was named the #1 team in the country for the first time in school history. Two other Big Ten teams were included in the top ten. [complete poll]

Major Wins for Big Ten Teams

Illinois ended the NCAA-record 52-game winning streak of #1-ranked Southern California with a 3-2 victory on Saturday 9/11. The same day, Minnesota knocked off #4-ranked Florida 3-2. However, Michigan has the best non-conference record at 7-0. [Standings]

Olympics Volleyball on TV

No there aren't any Spartan volleyball players involved, and no, it doesn't fit the green heading at the top of the column, but certainly some of you want to watch Olympic volleyball. Most viewers with cable TV will be able to see coverage on at least NBC, MSNBC and CNBC and maybe more channels. Court Upholds Decision Against MHSAA

A federal appeals court has upheld a lower court decision in favor of parents of high school volleyball players and against the Michigan High School Athletic Association. The court ruled unanimously that the scheduling of Michigan's high school sports seasons hurts volleyball players. On August 4, the MHSAA annnounced that they will appeal the decision. [full story]

Preseason Coaches Poll Released August 9

USC, Nebraska, UCLA and Florida take the top four spots in the AVCA poll, with Minnesota and Penn State leading the Big Ten in the number 5 and 8 positions. The MSU Spartans get 45 points, good for the unofficial 36th spot. [full story]

Cindy Fredrick Named Iowa Coach

Fredrick comes from Washington State University, replacing Rita Buck-Crockett who resigned as head coach in March to move to Florida with her husband, taking an associate coach position with Florida State University.[full story]
